Throwback Thursday from 2023 for the Iceland Beer Spa – Architecture Competition

Two years ago, Benjamin Mundin-Smith, Nadia Luhar and George Sands took part in Architecture Competitions // Buildner Iceland Beer Spa Architecture competition.

The brief was to design a new multi-purpose facility in the breathtaking Myvatn lake area of Northern Iceland, that featured a brewery, café snack bar, souvenir shop, and Beer Spa.

But what is a beer spa you may ask?

The brief described the concept as “a unique and innovative space, incorporating the therapeutic qualities of beer and the natural beauty of the surrounding environment to create a relaxing and rejuvenating experience”.

This included the requirements for the “beer bath area” to feature individual and/or shared tubs filled with a mixture of warm water, beer, and natural ingredients- that allowed guests to soak and enjoy the healing properties of beer.

HTC’s team created a solution that utilised shipping containers; both to reduce the carbon footprint of the design and craft a proposal that was temporary enough to be able to respond to the changing requirements of the space.
