Throwback Thursday from our London Office – 66 Worple Road Wimbledon

Tim Godsmark from our London Office began working on this development that included fourteen, two-bedroom flats based on the requirements from Merton Council’s density standards and the desire to maximise the benefits for the developer – MWL Developments. 🏗️🏗️

The site had previously housed a Sea Cadets’ Hall and had a significant incline across the site, with the materials chosen supported by the Local Planning Authority and informed specifically by the vernacular architecture of the substantial late nineteenth century houses in surrounding streets, with the aim to reinterpret them in a contemporary way. 👏👏

Durable materials were chosen for the exterior – brick and reconstituted stone – and the way the building is detailed is intended to minimise maintenance costs and to keep the building looking beautiful over many years. ✨✨

The limited size of the site also dictated that underground car parking be provided-  which, after consultations with the Council’s traffic engineers, was decided to be accessed via a car lift. The lift boasts a landscaped roof, so that when closed, it is as inconspicuous as possible. 🌱🌱

Further to this, stepping the design back enabled the reduction of the visual impact on the elevation that fronted a residential side road. Acorn Groundwork Ltd completed the flats in 2008 with a high standard of fittings and finishes – the two penthouses enjoying panoramic views across South-West London. 🏙️🏙️

Its great to take a look back at some of our previous projects and we look forward to sharing more of these soon! 📸📸
